Tourist tax – what is it?

The tourist tax is a specific resource, paid by tourists and intended to improve the tourist attractiveness of the territory. It is collected by accommodation providers/reservation platforms when customers pay for their stay. It is declared and controlled by the Tourist Office, transmitted to the Agglo Foix-Varilhes then to the Public Treasury, in charge of recovery.

The additional departmental tax – what is it?

The Departmental Council of Ariège has decided to introduce an additional tax since 1er January 2019 to encourage tourism development actions in Ariège.

What has changed since January 1, 2024

A new regional additional tax of 34% now applies since January 1, 2024.

To finance major infrastructure projects, article 4 of the mobility orientation law (LOM) allowed, by ordinance, the creation of local public establishments with specific resources, notably fiscal resources, in order to facilitate their realization. This mission consists of “ contribute to the financing of the railway infrastructure called “Great South-West Railway Project” ", be the Bordeaux – Toulouse / South -Gironde – Dax high-speed line project as well as the railway developments south of Bordeaux and north of Toulouse and those of the stations concerned by the project. This new tax will be added to the tourist tax established in the territories defined as affected by the future lines, i.e. the territories located less than an hour's journey from any station served in the future by the high-speed line.

The additional tax of 34% to the tourist tax is added to the rate deliberated by the Foix-Varilhes agglo.

 

AS A REMINDER: the tourist tax rates deliberated by the Foix-Varilhes agglo have not been increased, they have been identical since 2018.
