It's summer and if, like us at the Foix Tourist Office, you're a bon vivant, then an aperitif is sacred! The town of Foix has no shortage of cafes, bars and terraces for toasting after work or on your days off. But did you know that only a few evenings in the summer you can do that, at the Château de Foix? I'll tell you about our experience!

A unique place for an aperitif: the Château de Foix!

If someone had told me that one day I would go for an aperitif at Gaston Phoebus's table, I wouldn't have believed it, and yet!

Tour of the Foix castle in Ariège

It was at the end of the day, around 18:30 p.m., that we went (the dreamteam and I) to the Château de Foix. We might as well tell you that we felt privileged because the castle closes its doors at 19:00 p.m. during the summer.

The lights at the end of the day made the atmosphere of this evening truly special. We are very well received by the castle mediators dressed for the occasion in period outfits: There are Martha, the cook, Peyre the clerk et Arnaud. The atmosphere is established and we head towards the banquet hall, with around thirty other people, where we are seated. We were truly received like kings!

An enriching event

And this is where the “ show " begin. Because how else could I describe this event to you?

We take turns tasting different medieval alcohols (and you know, alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health!), accompanied by not-so-unfamiliar dishes that our ancestors from the Middle Ages enjoyed.

Arnaud and Martha exchange anecdotes during an aperitif at Gaston's at the Château de Foix in Ariège Pyrénées

Through the flavors, Martha and Arnaud explain to us what the nobles of the Middle Ages ate, why they added spices to their wine (and this is not to hide the taste of the wine, which was indeed of very good quality!), or how the merchants managed to make people believe that they had to confront a Phoenix to get cinnamon (yes… You read that right!).

You may be wondering why I don't give you more details on these juicy stories? It's because you can take part in this festive moment yourself at the Château de Foix !

Apart from the tastings, we loved it the mood of this moment. Very jovial, not really conventional, where we learn a whole bunch of anecdotes from our past that we had never heard elsewhere.

Something to tell us about at our next aperitif with friends 😉
