Located south of Foix, the municipality of Ferrieres-sur-Ariege developed from the 60s. In the past, the village had three iron deposits on its territory as well as ferruginous sources, and lead was also exploited there. It was then called “Ferriéras”, which means “place where iron is found”. Today, no trace of this mining past remains. Member of the Ariège Pyrenees Regional Natural Park, the town is crossed by Ariège and the stream of Gariac.
